Tile: A report Detailing Child Development Theories

Terms of Reference
:

Professor Audrey Babka, from University of Warsaw, has asked for a report about child development to help with research in this field. Professor Babka sent an email asking for this on 23rd January 2012. The report has not to contain recommendations.

Procedure
:
Handouts have been looked at and notes from lectures about the theorist, is how the research was gathered for this report.

Findings:
1.0      1.0  John Bowlby looked at stage of development, which come under emotional social and personal development. Bowlby stressed how important of the bond between mother and baby is as the need to form attachments are biological (innate). Bowlby found from research that the first five years are the most important for later personality development. Bowlby believed from this that children without warm continuous relationship with the mother suffer from maternal deprivation.

2.0      2.0  John Bowlby has influenced current early education and childcare practise greatly through things such as parents now get the opportunity to develop a relationship with people that are involved in the care of children and share unique knowledge of children. As parents benefit from sharing knowledge of the setting and activities and routines with children, which contributes to on going relationships. Bowlby has helped parents that may feel anxious about young children starting nursery as now parents can develop a strong bond with key workers. Children also benefit from key workers as it gives the child a face that is known to the child and also someone that knows all about the child.

3.0      3.0  Jean Piaget looked at that stage of development, which is cognitive development. Piaget found that babies are born with reflexes, which are involuntary responses to the environment. Piaget found that there are such things called schemata that are patterns of behaviour, which are used to guide and direct behaviour. Schemata are adapted through the assimilation and accommodation. Piaget found that there are four stages to cognitive development sensory motor stage, pre- operational stage, and concrete operations stage and then formal operation stage. Piaget believed not everyone could reach the final stage.

4.0 Piaget has influence practice now as early education workers can plan activities to the stage of cognitive development the child is at, as the key worker understands the child's cognitive development more. Also through schemata as patterns of behaviour will asset early educations workers to recognise the learning processes of individual children and provide a range of meaningful activities.

Conclusion:

Bowlby thought that being separated for a length of time could have significant effect of the future development of a child. Bowlby’s theory has helped to put key workers and open days in which parents and their children can come and get to know staff and the nursery environment. Piaget learnt that children learn at different stages, which has helped key workers plan activities for children in nursery that are best for the child’s stage of cognitive development.

Psychology Activity

John Bowlby looked at stage of development, which come under emotional social and personal development. Bowlby theory of attachment, separation, grief and loss. Bowbly stressed how important of the primary bond between mother and baby as the need to form attachments in biological (innate).  Bowlby found from his research that the first five years are the most important for later personality development. He believed from this that children without warm continuous relationship with the mother suffer from maternal deprivation as partial deprivations is the result of a mother substitute Bowlby thought that complete deprivation is the result of no attachment being formed and being separated for a length of time could have significant effect of the future development of a child.
John Bowlby has influenced current early education and childcare practise greatly through things such as parents getting the opportunity to develop relationship with those involved in the care of their children share their unique knowledge of their children. As parents benefit from sharing knowledge of the setting and its activities and routines with their children which contributes to their on going relationships. Bowlby has helped parents that may feel anxious about their children starting nursery as now parents can develop a strong bond with their children’s key worker. Children also benefit from their key worker as they meet their key worker before starting nursery. So Bowlby’s theory has helped to put key workers and open days in which parents and their children can come and get to know staff and the nursery environment.
Jean Piaget looked at that stage of development, which is cognitive development.  Piaget found that babies are born with reflexes which are involuntary responses to the environment. Piaget found that their as such things called schemata that are patterns of behaviour which we use to guide and direct our behaviour schemata are adapted through the assimilation and accommodation.  Piaget found that there are four stages to cognitive development sensory motor stage, pre- operational stage, and concrete operations stage and then formal operation stage, which he believed not everyone could reach. Piaget thought that it was impossible for children to understand unless they were operating at that stage of cognitive development. Piaget learnt that cognitive development occurs as a result of active exploration and discovery of the world by children.
Piaget has effected practise as he has now early education workers can plan activities to their stage of cognitive development as they understand the child's cognitive development more.  Also through schemata as patterns of behaviour will asset early educations workers to recognise the learning processes of individual children and provide a range of meaningful activities.

NC Childcare activity 1

I am spending my placement at Newark Primary School in which I have been in from the start of my course and will be until May in which placement ends. There are 16 children in the class I am in which are a primary one class.

I help in my learners by planning activities that are suited to their needs and their skills. Also trying my hardest to make sure they find such subjects like Math and Language fun and enjoyable. I also help with activities in which the class teacher has for the children to do. I as when doing activities like spelling it can be harder for some of the children so they need an extra hand due to something like they ether do not hear the word or they have a hard time writing the letter. Some of the children cannot count as well as others so need a helping hand with Math sheets that have been left for the children to do on their own. At placement I am also out in the playground during break time and at the end of lunchtime, which I enjoy as it means I can get ideas about activities for the children from observing how the children playing in the playground. It also means I get to meet children from other classes and other members of staff. I can get to know the children better way from the class room environment and they can get to know me better instead of seeing me as someone that can give them into trouble or just help then with school work.
My experience at the school is that they do not stand for bullying if a child is seen hurting another there are one of many things can happen they can be put on a time out, the child doing the hurting could be moved away from the person they are hitting and if it keeps happening the child will then be sent to see the head teacher.

The school has one child that has autism in the whole class set of primary one. The child gets someone in to help them every few days and take them away for special activities. The child also has an Early Education worker in their class room for help when ever they ether need time alone or time away from the class room environment.

From my experience in the primary school I hope to gain confidence my own skills through my placement. As my placement is in a primary school I am getting experiences in a school which helps my future career as I am interested in going to university to do a degree in primary school teaching. I am still unsure about my career as psychology interest me as well as being a Nursery Teacher so hope that my experience in placement helps me to find out if being a teacher is something I wish to do as a career or if it is not then placement has helped me narrow down my choices.
